Virus Alert

If anyone has received e-mails from me, do not open attachments. I am going offline, and taking my computer to work tomorrow to get it cleaned up.

There was a widely circulated virus threat hoax on 18 December, recommending people to delete a file called "sulfnbk.exe." In fact, it would be a mistake, though not a major one, to delete that file. Here is the explanation I received of this file:

This is not a virus. This is a system file that Windows uses to restore long file names. Please do not delete it. If you have deleted it, the file can be restored if it is ever needed. Normal Windows operation does not use this file.

So, if you did delete it, at least you're not screwed.

I thought I had the virus. Fortunately before I made a deletion, I checked it out at www.antivirus.com(See link below) Sargon is right. This is just a hoax although it is possible this file can be infected with a virus. This site has a free scan that you can use to check if your computer has a virus. You can also get information on any virus. Just type in the name in the search field and hit Go.

I received a couple of e-mails that had T-man's email address as the sender. There was no text message but there was an unknown attachment.

A McAfee scan was negative, but since I wasn't expecting anything from T-man, and since I found the lack of any text message rather odd, to say the least, I played it safe and deleted them.

I got back from Vegas yesterday with extreme jet lag (LV to Detroit to Memphis to Atlanta, but the ticket was cheap). I made a joking post to Don, and then checked my mail. Horrors!

I had piles of reports of unsuccessful transmissions from my computer, and warnings from Stanford Wong and Viktor Nacht of suspicious attachments on messages from me. I deleted all the ugly stuff, made the post above, and disconnected my computer. I purchased Norton AntiVirus (R), and installed it this evening. Norton found nothing.

I just went back on line. There was an e-mail from someone who co-ordinated the high school reunion I went to this summer warning me that she had accidently sent out this sulfnbk.exe virus. Funny thing, I am not included on the extensive sent-to list.

I am careful about what I open. To the best of my knowledge, I have not opened anything that appeared suspicious either prior to or after opening it.

At the moment, I am pissed, apologetic, and worried. If anybody receives anything suspicious from me, please do not open it and notify me immediately.
