A very successful advantage player and Green Chip member once wrote the following advice for new players:

... you should read every good book out there right from Beat the Dealer to all of Stanford Wong's books, Arnold Snyder's books, Don Schlesinger's books, Norm Wattenberger’s Modern Blackjack and of course James Grosjean’s Beyond Counting. You should also get all of Norm's software. The technical knowledge will be very valuable in fine-tuning your game along the way and also help how you approach other games.

Nice post Al. If you are serious about your casino visits playing BJ is easier to learn than the piano or the flute and there is money in it too.

Al's recommendations are right on the money -- all good, interesting and informative.

A friend gave me a really terrible ploppy-style BJ book, "Take the Money and Run." It has some good basic strategy advice and lots of common misconceptions. I quote those at the table for camouflage. So, there is useful value even in bad books.

Keep reading, it will improve your game. Bob Dancer makes some good recommendations in GWAE.

Also, I played in marching band and I think it helped. I notice that some dealers definitely deal in rhythm. You can fall into step with them and comfortably increase your hands per hour.

The one I liked most early on was. The BIG BOOK of Blackjack by Arnold Snyder and Bootlegger's 200 Proof Blackjack by Bootleg Tuner.

Any one real book which includes a count. Whatever it is it will be good enough.

Then- experience. Conditions are constantly changing and experience is what you need to overcome that. A good game is more important than a good count. Then, you can decide what other books you want to read depending on what they in particular offer.

If you serious some coding skills in a compiled language are necessary. If you don't know any, QB64 is a well-supported compiled BASIC that is good enough to analyze what you find, and what you get from your code will sometimes be information no one else has.
