Whenever dealing with scalpers, you should always look at the current market on Stubhub or a similar site. You should also get a seating map of the venue up on your phone (this is usually pretty easy to find with Google images). Because obviously they will lie to you and tell you the ticket is on the 40 yard line when it's actually on the 20 etc. This is less of an issue in areas where scalping is legal. Some of the guys even have seating maps on a necklace around their necks. Oftentimes they will start with a number that is extremely high, like 3x what they would be willing to sell for. This is why you need to research the current market. As an example I recently went to a Pac 12 football game as a last minute decision. I got there late and by the time I got to the scalpers the game had already started. This is huge leverage for me as the tickets they hold are going to $0 within the next hour or so.
