someone will respond bad mouthing Green Chip. Well, this monthly ritual isn't just a pathetic sight, it's also backfiring at the detractors! How can we think less of Green Chip at the very moment when we see a prize (a hundred bucks ain't a cheap prize) been awarded to a Green Chip post?! By that logic we are supposed to criticise the Oscars at the very moment when they award the Big Prize (let me watch the fucking program, is the more likely response.)

Methinks the honorable detractors of Green Chip ought to choose more opportunely the timing and the content of their interventions.Those trolling hidalgos need more finesse than the crass tactics currently exhibited.

Assuming 20% are those making it pretty consistently out of say 1000 players. That gives about 200 players who basically have the "dow" in the first place and really NOT DEPENDENT on making it by "advantage" play.

My observation is that, it is likely that most of these players are taking it as a CHALLENGE to their SKILLS & ABILITIES.

Assuming there are at least one million anxious gamblers aspiring to living on casino profits from "advantage" gambling (SOTSOG, PRO, etc. then, the success rate is like 200/1,000,000 X 100 = 2%

Now, who would seriously think about belonging to a Private Club of Serious people in order to try to make a living by "advantage" gambling? Does it make sense if it was a BUSINESS proposition?

The real winners appear to be much less (and also may be changing over time) than 5% in my opinion even using conservative assumptions and those hopefuls who think they have what it takes to be a winner.

Based on my assumptions (see my post above), the success rate is even less than 1% (actually, 0.02%!) to discourage even any person of common sense before embarking on such risk taking.

However, the lure and hope is there for the multitudes for making "easy money" calling it whatever it "advantage" gambling. I thank you for your untypically unemotional response. Such response is specially hard to get from those who happen to be in an addictive mode. However, I not only read the written response but the lines in between. It is amazing how defensive and aggressive they become when few pertinent and logical questions are raised about it. Thanks again. BS

How much start up capital, time, and effort is required to open a resturant? How many people attempt to go into the resturant business every day? What is the success rate and how many go broke or out of business in the attempt?

What about internet start-up companies? How many of those where attemtped? How much time and effort and millions of dollars tried and failed?

Considering the starting capital requirements and the flexible hours, advantage play isn't that big of a 'gamble' compared to other more conventional ventures.

A year or two ago, everybody and his brother thought that day trading stocks was the way to get rich quick. Maybe they should have tried blackjack, probably would have had a better chance.

where to you get that there are 1,000,000 aspiring advantage players. 99.9% of all people in casinos don't have a clue. If there are more than 20,000 full and part-time advantage players, at any given moment, in the entire United States I would be seriously suprised.

Many of the players, especially part timers, are professionals (Doctors, Lawyers, PhD's, who like the challenge) Many are full time players who started with small bankrolls and through a combination of luck and skill are now well financed and able to play at high stakes. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

Gamblers in the United States....several Million

People who think they have an edge (but never bothered to read any books about advantage play or learn basic strategy)....half of several Million

Advantage Players of all types (who have some knowledge of the game, have read some books, etc)....perhaps as many as 50,000 people in the United States. (People who bought some card counting book in the last 10 years)

Advantage Players who have the skills to beat the game and play fairly regularly...maybe 1000-2000 in the US (Probably as many people as who bought Blackjack Attack 2nd Edition)

Advantage Players with the skills, time, and bankroll to be a serious threat to casinos...maybe 200-300 in the US. (People who understood Blackjack Attack, 2nd Edition)

He is lumping every starry-eyed idiot who has ever walked into a casino with dreams of hitting the big slot machine mega-jackpot in with true professional advantage players and extrapolating a 'success rate' from this population.

Looking at the pathetic sales numbers on quality BJ book sales does kind of confirm that there cannot be that many serious players out there. While surely some serious BJ players don't have/need BJA I/II, I certainly don't know of any personally.

Even if you are coorect in stating that .02% of all gamblers win (and from what I've seen at the blackjack table that number may not be far off LOL) that still leaves quite a few gamblers who win. It's not like Stanford is scamming anyone by claiming his Green Chip will help someone win, because knowledge of the game is very important. I may even subscribe to GC eventually myself. But one thing I would like to make clear is that MERELY buying GC or even the best book ever written on gambling won't automatically turn someone into a winner. It takes more than nuts and bolts knowledge of the numbers and methods of play in order to become a winner. One must first get rid of any addictive personality traits and they also must have confidence in your own system even during a bad swing. And for lack of a better phrase, balls of steel and nerves of iron. This is much easier said than done, as most people gamble not to win but to act out their psychological hangups, whether they want to admit it or not. All the knowledge in the world won't help these people.

Agree that in both areas you mentioned, Restaurant and Internet ventures, the success rates are quite low (20%?). Though nothing as low as in the area of any gambling endeavor.

Because both are risk taking, it does not make them really comparable. We're not even comparing apples with oranges here. Why?

Gambling is a lonely struggle against too many personal and game related reasons. Therefore, there may be too many reasons for failure and also the limitations imposed by the rules of the game.

The businesses are ventures that are not comparable with what gambler faces in any organized society. Have you asked for financial support or help for your gambling undertaking or career? Would you loan some money for me to venture into gambling?

However, if you're in those other business ventures (restaurant & internet-startup) you can do that for obtaining loans for your business enterprise.

I do not see a basis for comparing the two. However, one could lose money, bigtime, in business ventures, too. That does not validate gambling to be a better career to follow. How about getting into other more successful businesses or better business models for success?

I know someone who only read "Professional Blackjack" who is one of the best blackjack counters in the country. What he did was run his own programs and apply what he learned, but much of his success is from sheer obsession and a totally emotionless approach to the game. It is possible to self teach yourself but I'll admit that most people can save a lot of time by reading and applying a good book.

Even if I agree with the numbers you gave (sounds too rosy a picture) the success rate is about 10% of those skilled and knowledgeable. Now, that is not something to write home about.

I do not agree with your numbers as there are much more gamblers or gambling enthusiasts if you take your clue from the posters on increasingly growing message boards.

I believe that for most people, gambling should come AFTER success in another field or in business. Many advantage players don't do it as their sole source of income, but for (winning) entertainment during their off time. Just because someone gambles for fun on the weekends or evenings doesn't mean they can't be an advantage players. It could be a nice 2nd income for these folks.

Than the number of gamblers in the US goes into many millions. I do not have a number but the expansion in casinos is not seen yet lessened because of the "increasing" number of so called "advantage" gamblers who "think" they are making all making a living from their gambling alone.

The problem is that addictive character traits attract many into this thing in the first place. Therefore, it is not in "advantage" play that one can find the real answer.

One can see from where (motivation) responses come from. Many feel instantly offended and defiant to a cool discussion about it. How could they ever become winners in gambling whether it's called "advantage" or else? One needs to have an all round balanced personality to start let alone be merely knowledgeable of card counting and awareness of "advantage" games. Thanks again.

I only made an important observation and suggestion. I am knowledgeable of contracts from my career.

Because, one word means a lot when you're dealing with money to a range of people who really may have limited knowledge of what to expect.

Also, times are becoming more contentious and litigation oriented, in the USA.

I know that Harrah's was even being sued by one client for having been given ALL that UNUSUAL, EXTRA ATTENTION, EASE and COMFORT that he claimed was ENTRAPMENT as he lost money. He may have lost relatively larger sums and ended getting drunk while gambling.

The point was to discourage such people expecting something being hooked on the meaning or the interpretation of one key word. That's all.
