I play perfect basic strategy, and I have zero experience as a card counter. (My gambling background is in poker—in which I make modest profits.) I have a lot of free time on my hands right now, and I'd like to learn a counting system to eliminate the house edge with a modest bet spread. The goal is to enjoy comps that come as I play a break even game—focusing primarily at double deck games. Would the OPP, the ace-five, or another very basic counting system work for this purpose? Mastering a very basic system should enable me to achieve my goal, shouldn't it? Thank you in advance for your advice.

Yes, the OPP or the ace-five count will work but I am guessing you will need a moderate betting spread to break even. If you have a moderate spread you would look more like a card counter to a casino. Another idea is to get the book "Knock Out Blackjack" and learn the simple card counting system in the book. If you use the beginning system, the KO Rookie, you can break even with only a 1-2 betting spread in a typical 2 deck game. That could easily allow you to achieve your goal. You probably can play indefinitely with a 1-2 betting spread on a 2 deck game.

Using a more traditional card counting system like the KO count is a little more work but it you play poker successfully it won't be very hard for you to master it. Finally, using a typical card counting system allows you to easily test specific techniques and conditions with widely available blackjack simulation programs. The OPP and A-5 systems are not as easy to test with readily available simulation programs.

Blackjack is a tough way to earn comps in most places. Time is money, and if you treat the time you spend playing for comps as time you aren't playing poker profitably, you might be better off learning the finesse of machine play, chasing promotions and jackpots on slots and video poker where you are comped much better usually, than a break-even BJ game.

I understand the benefit of a side game and comps for a poker player, getting food and rooms so you can spend more time at the tables. If you're going to learn BJ might as well learn High-Low or some other well documented system
