Kill Phil presents a strategy for no-limit poker tournaments. Kill Phil means win all the chips of a poker expert, knocking that person out of the tournament. Several poker tournament experts are named Phil; hence the title. Kill Phil will help you win only in tournaments, and not in your weekly poker games.
One of the techniques you can use to come up with a good strategy for a game is looking at game the from the viewpoint of your opponent, and figuring out what that person least wants you to do. Whatever your opponent does not want you to do is something you should consider doing. In a no-limit tournament, your opponent hates to be put in the position of having to go all in to call you. That suggests that going all in is a play to consider. From the books foreword by poker great Phil Helmuth: I will go to great lengths to avoid putting all of my chips at risk in any hand, because when Im all-in, then its possible for me to be eliminated.
Of course Kill Phil contains much more advice than merely to go all-in if you find yourself at the same table as Phil Helmuth. The book begins with Kill Phil Rookie, a simplified strategy for beginners. Then it presents a more advanced strategy, Kill Phil Basic. The book does not stop there; it also presents some important poker concepts that improve on Kill Phil Basic, and some high-level plays and strategies.
The authors are longtime poker pros Blair Rodman and Lee Nelson. Our own Kim Lee assisted with the book, though he is not listed as a coauthor.
