I've learned a counting system and have been practicing and reading various books on the subject and am left with the question "is it worth the effort?" If I go by stats presented in books, $16/hour to be made when averaged out over the long haul. Another stated that it would take 400+ hours to double your stake with $20 min bets.
Given those numbers it hardly seems worth the time. What am I missing?

I don't which books you are talking about. The amount you make per hour is proportional to the size of your bets. If you make $16/hour with $25 unit, you make $64/hour with $100 units.

There are different motivations for different people. Personally I can't see giving up a good paying job to live a marginal existence, but I do enjoy free vacations every month or so. And it certainly beats the alternative of playing a losing game.
