OK, the pit scrutiny tends to be more. What is reasonable for bet spread at a $50 Min Double deck game?
Is 6/1 ok ($50 min, up to $300 top bet)? Better to cap it at $200?
What about 1st hand of new shoe? Is it ok to start w/ $50 each time? A cover play here, like $75 or $100 occasionally, is not cheap.

Why do you say it isn't cheap? If it's -.45 off the top on a $200 bet, isn't that -.90C?
If it is a -.45% House Edge game, there is no reason to play it -- unless penetration is at 75% or better.
I NEVER bet the minimum "off the top"; that is for amateurs, and not for an A P looking to mask his betting spread.
The last post, above, needs to look at the cost of the bet as the House Edge (as a percentage)
on the difference between the minimum and the larger bet.
So ... if it is a game with a Basic Strategist's -0.40% e.v. and it is a $50 game - the COST to the player is 0.40% of the $50 difference. That is 20 cents ! Yes -- 20� If you are properly capitalized for a $50 game spreading 6 to 1 on ONE spot and are concerned about a 20� expenditure you need to take up a game that is less stressful for you.
Betting $100 off the top will allow you to spread 8 to 1 ($50 to $400) by only betting $50 at -2 or worse. In short sessions you will look like you are betting 4 to 1 and the welcoming red carpet will be there for you upon your return.
Greed Kills. Longevity is your goal.
EV cost is minimal, as you point out. The increased variance, and resulting larger bankroll need is the killer, especially if you plan to make $100 bets while the deck stays in neutral (as opposed to one $100 bet off the top and then immediately dropping down to $50).
If the House Advantage is not too high,
the cost is very modest; and you only
drop your bet IF you have lost your 1st bet.
