Fiesta advises split 9-9 vs. 7

Quoting from The Fiestas magazine, an advertising insert published in the Las Vegas Review Journal 6/26/08 (July 2008 issue, page 2, "Insider Info"):

We asked Ray Anzevino, director of operations for Fiesta Henderson, what the Fiesta winners know about playing and he said:

Always split a pair of nines against a dealer's seven. Why? Because the book says so.

Yeah right.

Moral: never trust gambling advice published by a casino.

You can profitably make that split play if both of these conditions are true:

1. Double after Split is enabled

2. There is a very positive "true count" i.e +3 or above [Hi-Lo]

A Basic Strategy player, of course, would be losing a lot by making this split, which when eschewed is quite profitable.

Fortunately the amateur play is to stand on 9-9 vs. 7, and to stand on A-8 against a dealer's nine, ten, or Ace.

The latter plays are wrong while the former play is correct.

Given your previous post regarding the fine nuances of basic strategy, it might be worth noting that it IS correct to stand on A-8 against a 9, 10, or A (of course, you should generally hit A-7 against those upcards...if you'd like, you can still one-up all of us by pointing out that BS says to stand on A-7 v. A in 1D, S17).

Obvious typo on my part.
