Dealing Blackjack?

What do you think as to a profession/job as being a blackjack dealer as a part time job? I am not 21 yet and really need to amass a larger bankroll but the lure of the casino is too great, I work flexible hours in real estate would a job on the inside of a casino being a dealer be of decent pay? would i Learn any valuable information? any comments help.... also how bad is it dealing bj 8 hours a day all week, I have dealt at parties for 6-10 hours but never in a professional casino setting.

Do not know if you are still in school but you should get a college education, if for no other reason to give you options. Dealing blackjack can easily be a dead end job. You might move up the casino food chain but in many many places, dealers actually make more money than the pit, so the money becomes a trap and you land up dealing forever or till you burn out. Playing blackjack as a full time pro can be done but there are very few who do it and even fewer who can do it for a lifetime.

I happen to have a relative who got her degree in engineering and because of a family connection took a lucrative dealing job shortly after finishing college. She did this for a couple of years, lived at home, saved her money and moved successfully into a career as an engineer. She also did quite well as a recreational counter.

You can make a good living in real estate if that interests you, so you might devote time and get your license.

What kind of job is dealing? I think it depends on what kind of person you are. You will never be mentally challenged, you will have tables you might enjoy and you will have tables that might be tedious. You will always have to put up with the egos of those above you and favoritism runs rampat in the casino business. I think it is an extremely booring job. If you are a kind hearted person who takes stuff home with you, forget it, you will not survive! You will get abused by customers who foolishly think you are doing something that makes them lose. There will be a player that you really like and you will take all of that players money. There are dealers who always seem up or always seem the same and these people can last. But I think they only last because they are in a job where the money is a trap. Do not forget, the guy or gal behind the counter at your local McDonald's has an equal amount of educational need to do his job as the dealer behind the blackjack table. Self realization of this fact casuses most dealers to stay.

Clearly you have the cart in front of the horse and are making emotional decisions at this point in your life.

Lemme give ya a BIG clue...get your education first and now. Whatever it is get it now while you're young. Furthermore, persue a degree that will lead to a job opportunity in a field you enjoy, and if you are able, go to Graduate school. The key to work is having a job that you enjoy doing.

The casinos will always be there. What happens if you tap out in 5 years? Now you're 26 and still got nada. Don't be sucked in by all the neon, use your brain and prepare for your future.

One more point...when you land that job after all the studying and sacrifice we've all endured who have been to college, begin to save for your future big time. Start with 10% and work up as your pay increases. You will be amazed at what you'll have (if you invest it wisely)in your mid-life years. Time and compound interest do wonders!!

Dump da casino dealer thing.

My advice to you is to never enter a casino again as long as you live. You should avoid gambling in ANY form, even things as seemingly innocuous as buying state lottery tickets.

If you feel the "lure of the casino," that strongly you are at least potentially and, at worst, very likely a candidate for Gamblers Anonymous.

The only people who are successful at this (or poker, or any form of gambling in which an advantage can be obtained) are either devoid of, or able to totally supress, the emotional aspect which you are apparently describing.

my niece has a college degree,majored in english.everything she "learned" could have been attained at Barnes and Noble bookstore.she's in debt for her "education" to the tune of about $140,000.00 to top it off so to speak she doesn't know her ass from her elbow! Best of luck to all!

I was introduced to the RICH DAD series at age 14 and since then have owned businesses, I DO have my real estate license and have had it since I was 18. I wanted to get the BJ / casino job as a side thing in addition to real estate. I have over 20k saved and I own a 3 family home, I am by no means uneducated although I have no formal education, this is all self made.

Was just curious as to if it would be a fun job and if i would learn anything in the next year before I start counting as a part time hobby/small income.

I didn't insult your screen name, and I thought my comments to you were pretty nice and straight forward.

But, I can see my time was wasted. I HIGHLY recommend you immediately apply for dealer's school. I trust you'll get a real thrill out of "breaking in" at dumps like the Western.

I guess I really screwed up, progressionist. I majored in English, taught high school for 35 years, and am now getting paid 80 k a year to stay home on a defined benefit pension. Boy, those college educations are sure a scam, huh?

To have chosen a field you obviously enjoyed, planned a career, put in your time and now have that nice check coming in each month.

I was pretty stupid too, did that college thing, got an MBA (geez, how dumb is that?), put in my time with the Feds and retired with a very nice pension. The MBA doesn't mean I know more than anyone, BUT it sure as hell opened some doors that would otherwise have been closed. It was nice to always check the box "graduate school?" Y - N

Congrats on your retirement, AIN'T it great!!! Ya gotta love sleepin' in when it's pouring rain outside! Love it! Just got a nice "cost of living" raise, the Feds are pretty generous. Sure do hate I put all that time in going to college. What a waste! ;-)

PS, Beowulf, etc, just could not appreciate that stuff. Fortunately there were a few hotties in my class that helped pass the time nicely. :-) I recall that I got a C, and was glad to get it. The fringe benefits of that particular class far outweighed any damage to my GPA. You know, that one-on-one tutoring thing. :-)

No offense, WC, but an education alone won't make you successful. There are many educated derilects in the world.

I know many with grade or high school educations that make much more $$ than I because they own their own businesses, deal in real estate, stocks, etc.

I personally believe each to be "true" to themselves and do what they really WANT to do. If you have a "passion" for something, you will find a way to make your life successful, regardless of education.

If you want to work for somebody else, hey, go for it, but if you want to be self-employed, go for that, as well.

I didn't read your post until after I responded to WC, but you are doing the 'right' thing. Nothing wrong with a degree, I have 4. But I've also owned many different enterprises over the years and can tell you point blank that I have made more money on my own than from any degree I've gotten.
