Was this a cheater?

I was in Shreveport's Harrahs playing at a 25.00 minimun table and had 25. on the table. I was dealt a pair of 5's and dd against a dealer's 2. The dealer hit me with an ace and immediately took up the cards. I protested and she called over the pit boss. She said she took up the cards in order but when she spread them out a 2 was now mixed with my hand and the 5 was in another hand claiming I had a 5 and a 2 and doubled down on that hand. How could this happen, even the man next to me said I had 2 5's. The matter was settled by returing my bet. Could she have switched the cards when she picked them up?
