Going to LV for 4th of July

Anyone familiar with conditions (crowding, transport) during the holiday weekend? This will be my first trip to LV near a holiday. I'll be staying downtown but would like to check out some of the strip. I would be interested in opinions about renting a car versus CAT/cabs.
