Brain Freeze

I've been studing the simple hi/lo count for quite some time now. Last night I thought I was ready to simply play Basic Strategy and retain the running count. However, that was not so as my brain kept freezing up during the middle of rounds. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to overcome this? It's not that I don't recognize the values it's the numbers that just keep getting stuck in my head.
