Big Bet

What is meant by the term "big bet?" I have encounterd this term in SW's "Professional Blackjack" and on this forum. The advice I've heard is that one's big bet should be a fixed, small percentage of one's total bankroll. If anyone who could help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated.
