Betting strategy

I'm new to the game and I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times but....... What is the best strategy for betting on BJ. I've heard of a progression of sorts after every loss...such as 1,1,3,3,5,7,9,11, etc. Is this a good thing to do? Is there a standard that most "good" players go by? Thanks!!
