Fortunately I have no personal connection to this, but I appreciate the sentiment.
Incidents of this sort have been correlated to declines in crude prices. For the Iranian government, these outrages constitute a revenue event.
The hypocrisy of Iran's religious leadership, which seems to constantly be in position to trump their elected leadership (although their current president is a knee-jerk Jew-baiter who needs little trumping) is revealed by their systematic and continuous persecution of perhaps the world's most peaceful people, the Bah��. The pretense of hyper-morality they displayed during the American embassy hostage period is laughable. Remember that these are the same guys that purchased sophisticated Swiss printing machines to produce high quality counterfeits of American C-notes, which are probably still part of the cash reserves of many European banks. The long-suffering and sophisticated Iranian people, the fruit of one of our planet's oldest civilizations, must be exasperated at their inability to displace the mullahs, who are trying to force their country into a time machine for a trip 1300 years into the past.
In many Islamic countries, holding the Islamic faith "in contempt" is a violation of the criminal code. Just like a reasonable person could do anything else.
My post to GBV was merely an expression of sympathy for the fate of the 15 Briton's held captive in Iran, no more, no less. I do not care to indulge in a thread about oil or anything else not relevant to the fate of these individuals. Screw the oil, this is about coming home alive.
Perhaps the attached link will give you a crystal clear sense of my intentions. Bernie Gause was a close personal friend, I knew his wife and family very well. He always made those around him laugh and was a salt of the earth kinda guy. Life dealt him a very, very cruel blow.
Their downside? This wasn't an accident. They had to have considered it. And their determination could only have been: "What can they do about it?" And aside from uttering empty threats and appealing to their non-existent honor, that is now the question.
Interestingly, I just listened to John Bolton on CNN make (some) observations similar to my own.
So politics it is.
