expected value chart shows splitting in the SD, H17,DAS game to be the most advantageous strategy.
Stand -.187;
Split(noDAS) -193;
Split(DAS)-.186.
The 1-deck basic strategy web sites of the Wizard, Ken Smith, and BJ Math all say the same, namely split if dealer hits 17 and DAS is allowed.
I could have saved some web surfing time if I had followed ET Fan's post and checked Griffin first.

According to AOII strategy, when the count is +12 or greater, you split the pair of 9's against the Ace. I have also doubled with my 8 vs. the dealer 7 with a count of +10, and the dealer shook his head condescendingly. Point is the dealer should just deal and don't worry about whay the hell Im doing. Deal and hope I tip your ass.

A (high ranking) pit boss while talking to another player at the table (who he knew) explained that they have 6 deck shoes because they are impossible to card count!
He then proceeds to say "there isnt a card counter alive that can count a whole shoe"!
All with a straight face!

Most dealers think hitting 12 vs 2 is a bad play let alone against a 3.

I don't recall the exact wording but an advice inside a Nevada casino is a serious felony! I would never give advice inside a Nevada casino.

(And then obeying a dealer giving me advice probably gets a death sentence. I don't do that either.)

then I guess the young dealer at the 4 Queens who flat out said I was dumb for hitting a 13 against a 2 wins the prize. ("Hey man, that was really dumb, you ought to learn how to play this game or you're just throwing money away.") If I recall, he was full of advice, mostly in the "anybody who doesn't quit while they're ahead is a dummy," vein, or how if you learn to play roulette you can get a better edge, as he had learned from many years of experience. (He looked to be at least 24.)

I was having a horrible session at the 'Shoe a few years ago, playing a female dealer that was very friendly to me. After a third loss by one in a row, I just wasn't in the mood to play, and decided to take a break. Don't leave (Old School), she told me. You still have money left." I told her that was part of the freaking plan, as I pushed my chips in to color up!

A couple of dealers have figured out this ratio I guess and have warped it into strange advice. Wonder exactly when I should start counting?? When I show up do I ask when the last BJ was??
Strangely, this almost is counting. i.e., if the first two Aces did not have a 10 underneath then the 3rd ace (of same shoe) is slightly more likely to get that 10 (if in the same shoe).

I like the whole bit about only insuring 20's and BJ's. Some dealers go nuts when I insure my 2, 4.

Splitting 9's against an 8 has drawn strange looks before too. It's BS for crying out loud as is 12 vs. 2 or 3 (yeah...the dealer's bust card that will actually bust about 35% of the time). This is differet from the dealer who had issues with the 9, 9 vs. A which at least isn't a BS play.
