You have an unbeatable 21 with 50 dollars bet against a 6.The guy next to you offers you 10 bucks for the hand(ie he offers you 50 dollars for your chips on the spot plus 10 bucks for the pleasure of getting the result of the hand). So you are guarnteed 10 bucks as oppossed to a chance of winning 50.Silly huh wht if it was 20, 30, 40 , 45 etc.. It would be a math decision just like insurance is a math percentage decision. Blackjack is about odds in different circumstances adding up over time. Its possible for instance that doubling 9 vs. 4 has cost you money in your life but your lifetime results of doubling Ace 5 against 6 may be higher than it should. The hucksters like JP harp on short time for select plays when BJ is the sum of all plays that occur long term. A nickel saved here and there adds up just like a nickel lost here and there adds up.

The biographical information I've collected on Patrick from various bits of promotional literature suggests that a)he was a shill (not an insult, he actually worked as a poker shill for several years) b) he lost a large amount of money to the casinos and may be a compulsive gambler c) his books don't sell half as well as everyone thinks they do, and he was dumped by a former publisher.
Some interesting oddities:- despite his terrible blackjack advice he does actually recommend a (weak) count system rather like the old ten-count system, and despite his weird basic strategy he probably plays with a small advantage.
Patrick offered a sports tout service for some time but now gives away free picks after it became clear just how bad his advice was.

Despite some careful probing I could find no cast-iron evidence that Patrick was actually being paid by the casinos to promote misinformation-I suspected this might be the case because Patrick's videos are filmed in casinos-which would never happen with any credible blackjack author-however, I now think the marriage is one of convenience rather than calculation.

Patrick's modus operandi is to lurk on newsgroups like rec.gambling.craps and respond personally via e-mail to questions which mention his work-he builds up a lot of loyal fans this way, who become irrational the way people do after they have received personal contact with a B-list TV celeb.

Patrick fans should note I don't just pontificate on forums like this one where I know everyone agrees with me. Patrick won't respond here but I DID manage to provoke him into a rare response once (see link below).

His story is spread accross all his original books that
DO NOT HAVE HIS PICTURE ON THE FRONT. Those with the
picture do not contain the stories that show how he
crawled back from dead broke. The stories lend reason
as to how and why he uses his methods. Some of what you
posted is accurate and some is someone elses propaganda.
His methods are to keep the little guy in the games till he can
cacth a streak and get alittle ahead-NO BIG BETS REQUIRED.

"Catching a streak" is the oldest gambling misconception around. Streaks and patterns show up flipping a coin, betting the pass line on craps, betting red at roulette, and on blackjack computer sims. You name it. The same kinds of patterns are all there, but can only be identified AFTER THE FACT. A winning or losing streak or any type of pattern can only be recognized as a historical event. After seeing any initial pattern that the gambler uses to predict a streak, the next results are RANDOM!!! Scientific and real life fact! Published accounts "proving" the contrary are either fraudulent, not done with proper controls, or were a one time result that subsequent experiments will not back up.

Maybe we should use Tarot cards or astrology to predict when to bet big. Why not? Should work just as well. :-)
