is it correct to just hit a 4-4 vs 5 at a ct of zero or below--------------and just hit a 4-4 at a ct of -2 or below? seems like this is backward.

i may have been misleading, what i mean is splitting fours at a ct of zero or less would be good (less 10's) and hitting (not splitting) above that would be good (more 10's). same with 3-3 vs 2 (@0) and 6-6 vs 2 (@ -2)
You don't split fours because you're looking to make a good hand; you split them against the dealer's worst upcards (5, 6) at higher counts because the dealer is all the more likely to bust.
When discussing strategy plays, always stipulate the number of decks and rules. Note that, for DAS, splitting fours can be a basic strategy play against certain dealer upcards.

thanks mr schlesinger, was unclear on my ques again (as usual), i know to split 4/4,s in most cases against a dealer 5 or 6. my concern is whether splitting (with dealer 5 or 6 up) at any positive count/and hitting at 0 and below) is correct. am using synders red seven count. 6d, das, rs aces, h17. have got bascic strategy/counting, am working on the deviation plays ..... thanks for any input
When you frame a question, be specific: number of decks and rules!!
Regardless, you split when the count is higher, not lower.
