Question for sixdeck

I was playing blackjack the other day and I asked the pitboss, "do you have me buying in for X dollars?" This asshole dealer butts in and says no, you only bought in for Y dollars." The dealer had been on break for about 20 minutes and had no idea how much money I had pulled out while he was gone. Why would a dealer do something like that? My guess is he was trying to impress the pit boss. Anyway the PB had the correct amount and the dealer just managed to make an ass of himself and lose any tips he would have gotten from me.

Also, how much pressure does management put on dealers to color up players when they leave a table? And what reason do they give the dealer? I know they like to act like they just want the chips to avoid a fill, but surely it is to track the amount won or lost. Have you ever had players refuse to color up? What do you do in that case? I usually color up to avoid looking like an a-hole that may get scrutinized next time out.

While dealing, have you ever seen anyone get barred for counting?

Just tell the dealer "I`ll be back in a moment" and leave with your chips and never come back.

Good questions and I'm not so sure I know the answers.

I have not seen anyone get barred for counting however I have seen a picture posted in the pit area of a suspected counter and to alert the eye in the sky if seen. Also, a pit boss told me he thought a young man who comes in on day shift might be counting. Thats about all.

As for the dealer he was just a idiot and has probably had one too many bad players give him crap.

Furthermore, management puts pressure on the dealer to color for the two reasons you pretty much listed. 1) To avoid a fill and 2) keep track of how much you've won or lost. The 2nd being most important.
Asking players to color up in one of my poorest qualities. I always forget. When I do the pit boss always asks me how much he had with him and if he was loosing etc. So it's obvious they want to keep track.

Moreover, when I do ask someone to color up and he refuses they usually give me a susperstitious answer. Like having black always turns it around. Some people just say no and walk off in anger of lossing the last 3 hands or so. I have to accept whatever the player chooses. The pit ofcourse would like everyone to color up. If not they'll just ask me how much you had out there and not make a big deal out of it.

But if you are a high roller then I'm sure the pit won't have to ask me anything as they'll be watching. I guess jumping from table to table and palming some chips won't hurt at all.

The colour up can help especialy if you have been seucesful in hiding chips during your session.
Secondly I have neevr seen a player barred for counting but a friendly dealer did warn me I was under surveilance, I promptly left the casino and have never had problems there since.

I've just started reading some card counting books (KO is the one, which is best for me I think), but I have absolutely no idea what is meant by "Color up". Can someone please explain it to me? :-)

When you are leaving a table, the dealer will want to take all of your chips and change them into the highest denomination possible, this is called coloring up. The reason is three fold at least:
The obvious, that you might have 50 chips rattling in your pocket and it is much easier to walk around with six or seven.
By changing your chips it may prevent the table having to stop for a chip fill soon.
Probably most importantly to the casino, they can take a good guess on how much you won or lost based upon your cash out less your buy in. One reason that many of rathole when the opportunity presents itself.
