KO Question

I have a knock out question. I want to be sure I have the system right in the way it compares the initial running count (IRC) and key counts (point at which you multiply bet.) The book says with six deck you begin with an IRC or -20 and then a key count of -4. With eight decks it's -28 and -6. Why don't they simply start at -16 in a six deck shoe and -22 in an eight deck shoe. In both cases the key count would be zero. Am I missing something or not understanding? Similarly the two decks does not equal a zero key count. Any input? I just want to be certain that I understand what I'm supposed to be doing here.

The pivot is more important

I think they wanted to set up the system in a way that emphasizes the pivot point, which is the most important number anyway. With their method, it is always +4, regardless of the number of decks in play. This also happens to correspond to its equivalent in a hi-lo TC.

You can set the IRC anywhere you wish. I prefer an IRC of 0, regardless of the number of decks. I think CA here likes to set his at 32, so he doesn't have to worry about counting in negatives. If adjusting your IRC to keep the key count at zero is what you like, then go for it.

I believe the book explains this in the back...

I, too, start at zero and adjust the numbers.

I start at zero but..

if I had it to do over, I would choose IRC=10, or even 20, to avoid negatives as much as possible. I think mistakes are more likely on the negative side, for me anyway. I've used IRC=0 for nearly three years, and now use 25 indices, so I don't feel like changing.
