If so, in theory one could show a fakey to the player's club, or hotel clerk, they grab it and call the ever-on-duty state police officer, and one gets a misdemeanor arrest in a jiffy, fingerprints in the database, bail...
Am I right about that? Has it ever happened to anyone? Is there any surefire way around it?

Use of an alias is not in itself illegal, providing no fraud is involved. However, forging government-issued documents such as a driver's license is illegal.
The solution is to use a non government-issued ID, such as a phony employee ID card.
In the famous case of Chen vs Monte Carlo, Chen was using a fake Burmese passport. Since the country of Burma has not existed since the 60's, it could not be considered a forgery of a government issued document.
Of course, casino security and the local cops may not be particularily knowledgeable regarding the finer points of ID law, so you still could conceivably be backroomed, arrested, fingerprinted, etc., even though you might technically be within the law.
...if you use it NOT in the counterfited state -and- NOT for driving -and- NOT for illegal purpose, then you may have broken no law. Notwithstanding, for a casino use a non-counterfit 'novelty ID' may be theoretically less-risky. In either case be certain to carefully hide them when not in use - being stopped by customs or law enforcement with large cash and multiple phony IDs could be damaging to your BR.

NRS (Nevada Revised Statutes) section 205.465 makes it a misdemeanor to possess any document for the purpose of establishing a false identity. In Nevada a misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of not more than $1000 and six months in jail. Nevada cases finding this statute constitutional justify it as a legitimate protection against fraud. It therefore followers that unless you were engaging in fraud, there would not be a violation. The purpose and effect of your offering a false ID is the important thing, not the mere possession. The way to avoid this is to not surrender the ID to any casino personnel. Let them look at it, but don't let them walk away with it. What legitimate business do they have for copying it? I have never allowed a casino to copy even a valid D.L. Too much information for their data base which could wind up God knows where.

NRS 205.465 Possession or sale of document or personal identifying information to establish false status or identity.
1. It is unlawful for a person to possess, sell or transfer any document or personal identifying information for the purpose of establishing a false status,
occupation, membership, license or identity for himself or any other person.
2. A person who:
(a) Sells or transfers any such document or personal identifying information in violation of subsection 1; or
(b) Possesses any such document or personal identifying information in violation of subsection 1 to commit any of the crimes set forth in NRS 205.085 to
205.217, inclusive, 205.473 to 205.513, inclusive, or 205.610 to 205.810, inclusive,
is guilty of a category C felony and shall be punished as provided in NRS 193.130.
3. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 2, a person who possesses any such document or personal identifying information in violation of subsection 1 is guilty of a misdemeanor.
4. Subsection 1 does not:
(a) Preclude the adoption by a city or county of an ordinance prohibiting the possession of any such document or personal identifying information; or
(b) Prohibit the possession or use of any such document or personal identifying information by officers of local police, sheriff and metropolitan police departments and by agents of the investigation division of the department of motor vehicles and public safety while engaged in undercover investigations related to the lawful discharge of their duties.

(a) "Document" includes, without limitation, a photocopy print, photostat and other replica of a document.

(1) The name, driver's license number, social security number, savings account number, credit card number, debit card number, date of birth, place of
employment and maiden name of the mother of a person; and
(2) The fingerprints, voiceprint, retina image and iris image of a person.

Ok, well seeing as the ID is not a real ID and you are not using it to defraud then it is not illegal by that reasoning.
Most fake ID's are just that, "Fake". Most even say "novelty item" or something to that effect. It is a gag that is all.
It is not a crime, nor does it hurt society. You should keep a letter with you from an attorney if you are playing for real stakes. The letter should probably state why you carry money, why you have a gag gift next to your real license. I doubt any casino would want to get into trouble with the law about giving you hastles. They know how the game is played, just like we do. It is cat and mouse period. Any unforseen hassles could cost them a lawsuit and has in the past with other CC's.
It may be illegal in in statutory terms to have a fake ID with intent to defraud but who are you defrauding? People that don't need to know who you are anyway. It is very selective for a casino to ask ID of someone and also and invasion of their privacy in the most basic of terms. If I am ID'ed why isn't everyone else in the casino ID'ed also? You will encounter little trouble with a fake ID, just only use it to play blackjack and you will be fine :)
