I finally got a 9,9 vs A at the proper count to call for a split. Play turned out to be extremely valuable. Pit had started watching my play closely for several hands since the 'checks play' call, but when I split the 9s against the dealer's Ace, they immediately lost all interest in my play.
Oh, I lost one and won one, for a push overall on the split, which was good because the 9,9 would have lost as the dealer had 19. But since that play made the pit label me as 'idiot who doesn't even know basic strategy', it was a very nice play.
