House advantage? (newbie :))

Hi all

Maybe a stupid question, but:

Where does the house get an advantage in blackjack?
If i play like the dealer (hit on 16 stay on 17), why wont i have
the same chances of winning as the dealer?
(I know it cant be so, just cant guess why :))

Hi Donati,

The quick answer is that the house's advantage is derived from the fact that the house plays after you, so that if you bust then you lose even if the house busts.

a little deeper into the subject

The fact that when you and the dealer bust, you loose, is the most important rule in the game. IMHO all the other rules, such as 3-2 on a natural, splitting, doubling and things the dealer can not do but you can, were designed to almost equalize the effects (but not quite) of the first rule.
