If you don't have any simulation software, you might want to get Beat the X Deck by Snyder for the particular games you play and The World's Greatest Blackjack Simulation by Auston for the count you use.

The last four books are more or less "fun reads" but from them, you may pick up a better feel for the game that will ultimately add something to your own game.

I know they're dinosaurs, but they started it all. It seems like all of the books written after these two always reference the old farts. I still successfully play Revere's point count, and will be ordering his APC soon.

The question wasn't What are the greatest blackjack books ever written?

It was What books should I read in addition to what I have already read?

The information in the two books you list were written by pioneers, to be sure. The authors of the books I recommended have read those earlier books, and even refer to them. Standing on the shoulders of giants, don't you know?

I didn't particularly like Playing Blackjack as a Business. That is just a personal dislike for Revere's writing style.

As for as Thorp, I have a regular copy of Beat the Dealer which is well worn by me using it as reference text.

I also have a hardcover first edition copy complete with dustcover, and the little envelope in the back that contains the Ten Count Strategy cards.

The front page has a page long hand written personal note written to me by Doctor Thorp himself.

I enjoyed Revere's book and bought his APC in the early 70's. Now, there is plenty of unequivocable evidence that there are many counting systems more powerful than the APC; for example AO II or Hi OPT. These are both available in books and you will win more with either of them.

Take the $200 you would spend on the APC and enjoy a nice dinner on the town.

Perry's Blackjack Diary I think is actually pretty essential reading, though I agree about the others. Perry completely resists any attempt to glamourize his subject.

I have two additional suggestions: Richard Epstein's "Theory Of Gambling And Statistical Logic", an essential primer into the fundamentals of blackjack, math-heavy but readable, and Jacques Black's "The Money-Spinners", an excellent background to the history of the game which explains the theory behind card counting and advantage play in other games, in a very accessible manner.

John, I have never heard of Jacques Black's "The Money-Spinners". Does it cover all games or is it geared towards Blackjack.

As far as forgetting Beat the Dealer and Blackjack as a Business, it was exactly that, an oversight. At first glance of T-man's list, the only one's I initially noticed that he left out were Ian Andersen's.
