I've only been an AP for a few years so never before during an economic downturn. My question is what usually happens to conditions for APs. Do casinos tighten up or do people get desperate and hit the poker tables with little skill? I guess the third option would be no difference.

With a downturn in the economy, there are fewer people in casinos. I believe all of the following has been observed as a result:
1) Fewer tables are open, meaning that the average number of players per table hasn't changed much.
2) Table minimums are reduced.
3) Casinos have sent out better offers in the mail.
4) Ploppies are less inclined to tip, and dealers are more likely to toke hustle.
5) Casinos sweat their bottom line more, and are more likely to take counter-measures if they suspect someone is an AP.
6) It becomes more difficult for an AP to blend in, making it easier for them to get identified by the casino.
Unfortunately, with only a few exceptions, I'm not able to add "Offer games with better rules" to the above list.
Question for EmeraldCityBJ:
What are the few exceptions of casino's that are offering better games? I'm in the South Sound area and am looking for any decent 6-Deck or DD games that are reasonably close (ie and hour's drive)
When I commented on better games being offered in my post, I was specifically thinking of the 4D games introduced at the Tropicana in AC and the places in the Seattle area which have started offering Double-Double-Down on Spanish 21 for the first time. While neither of these are considered great games, they are certainly an improvement compared to many of the other games being offered in their respective areas.
For a complete listing of conditions in the Seattle area, I would recommend getting a copy of CBJN. Most Seattle/Tacoma/Everett casinos are kept up to date each month, and very few have information which is more than three months old. There are several playable games within a one hour's drive of your location.
