Don't try to impress people with your knowledge. A lot of new counters and wannabes talk about penetration and the math. Personally, if they don't know me at the place, I occasionally ask the dealer for advice. E.G., "I've heard its better to split 8s against a 10, what do you think I should do?" Pick plays that any counter should know, but that are misunderstood by a lot of ploppies. Also, appear to drink heavy. Although I am not a drinker, I have a friend who is, and he keeps bottlecaps on him so that he can recap the beer and put them in the fridge at home. This is good for milking a comp and to look like its the drinking thats making you foolishly up your bet, etc. The distractions are the biggest thing to overcome as a newby, so here's a good suggestion: Develop a speech impediment or some other vocal nuisance, that should keep the dealer and others from engaging you in too much conversation. That's my personal favorite. To keep other people off your table, try wearing a shirt thats too small, and have your tighty-whities showing above your belt-line. You might think I'm crazy but B.O. helps, I use artificial deerpiss scents available at sporting good and hunting supply store. Needless to say, when I play, no one talks to me or sits at my table. *sniffle*
