Exposed Hole Card

I had my max bet out this weekend and the dealer showed an ace but accidently flipped over her hole card and exposed her hand before I had a chance to make my play. The floor manager came over and instructed me to play out my hand with the knowledge of the hole card. The hole card was a 3. I was sitting with a hard 12 and wasn't sure what to do. I was using the hi-opt I count with a side count of aces and the count was +4 in the single deck. I forget what the ace count was, but I decided to stand on my hard 12 against the soft 14. The dealer ended up making a hand. If I had taken a hit I probably would have won the hand. Does anyone know how to figure out the correct play on this?

Also - does anyone have any suggestions on how to figure out how to play a hand when there is an exposed card and you don't have the right play memorized? I realize there are probably charts that you can refer to - but any suggestions when you are sitting there and having to make a decision within a couple of seconds.

According to Ed Thorp's Beat the Dealer, Table 6.1, against a soft 14 the minimum hard standing total is 14, so hitting your hard 12 is the Hole Card Basic Strategy (HCBS) play. However, like regular BS, HCBS is based on knowing only the dealer's and player's cards: no use is made of card counting information. To determine the best play given your knowledge of the count, you'd have to run simulations. However, having knowledge of the dealer's hole card is so rare that learning a whole new set of index numbers in addition to HCBS is probably not an effective use of your time.

According to Stanford's books, you should stand on a HiLo count of +2 or above with a 12 vs A-3 - see "Double Exposure" chapters.
