David Sklansky's free clinics

The poker marked mugs amongst you might be interested to know that David Sklansky currently has his own page on the 2+2 forum (find it through the Links page, in the left frame), where he entertains questions about anything - including poker. The general thrust of his forum is making people think deeper and better, which is, one would say, a useful objective under any circumstances. Since Sklansky usually charges upwards of $250 per hour for private lessons, we should consider this a nice freebie. And take advantage of it.

But Sklansky will not answer just any question. It has to strike his fancy. (So far, he responds to about 1 in 10.) You can even ask him about politics, or food, or sports - or sex. Just make it intelligent.

Within 11 days, David's post gets 10,000 hits & 700 replies from readers. We don't see any hits & replies like that in bj21.com. Hey what does David do right, and what does BJ21 do wrong? Hmmmm...does anybody care to explain why David becomes so popular all the suddenly?

I wouldn't say that BJ21 does anything wrong. It's just that Poker, by comparison, is extremely popular these days.

BJ21 is probably the most popular blackjack site. Activity volume does vary, on any particular page, but many of the Greenchip pages usually enjoy a nice amount of activity. Several other blackjack sites have either folded or have poor activity.

The one other blackjack site that enjoys a fair amount of activity is Arnold Snyder's site. The pages do not display the number of hits that have been made on each post, but there is a healthy number of posts made, especially on the "Players Only" pages.

As ya'll have mentioned, off topic pages get a lot of activity on David's site. Same is true here. The Politics & Debate page is hugely active, and the Social & Humor page may not get a large readership, but the folks there are having a lot of fun.

Martial arts have a similiarity to poker in that their is no one art which beats all the others. It has a scissors/paper/stone element to it, as various playing styles at poker tend to be optimal against certain types of opponent, and sub-optimal against others. My guess is that was Sklansky's point, though it does come across as the sort of discussion issue a 4th grader would raise.

"Does the '2+2' crowd really think Snyder's PTF advice is all that bad or is it simple professional jealousy?"

Personally I found the PTF to be very very insightful for the application it was written for. And while bluffing may be highly over rated, the general contrarian theme of his book goes along way these days in the poker room.

One can still read all of 2+2 without posting. But, yes, I'm posting.

There's no denying the intelligence and poker expertise of MS. But our little tiff showed him up for some significant weaknesses, which other poker experts, such as RZ, pointed out. I'd say that some of those weaknesses would spill onto his game, as well. On the other hand, DS seems, despite what is commonly believed, more wily and graceful socially than his writing partner.

I'm playing on William Hill, Party, Pacific, Paradise, Stars, and Tilt. I'm also trying to put together a gambling website with some people. Maybe in 2007.
