It should be sufficient to just play according to the hi-lo count no? There are plenty of deviations which occur frequently, that make you look like a gambler. I recall when I mastered basic strategy, but did not know anything about counting, I had the mindset that anyone making the wrong play according to basic strategy was a big loser.
Its funny, but when you dont know how to count cards, you are kind of missing out how to understand the game. Think of this scenario: imagine the count is huge, your max bet is out, and the dealer has an Ace, so you insure your hand having a soft 18. No blackjack, so you hit and catch a 7. Since the count is massive, you are advised to stay with your hard 15 according to strategy, and elect to do so. Imagine how redicilous this play looks to the average ploppy. I bet it doesn’t even look suspicious to the pit, it just looks horrible, yet it’s the optimal play.
And then there are the slightly negative counts where you hit 12 vs 4, or 13 vs 2, where people at the table assume you are crazy. Following the hi-lo deviations is cover in itself, in my opinion.
