BS question

Though the differences are minor, does anyone have an opinion on the effectiveness of the KO basic strategy charts versus others. I have used KO before and enjoy it's ease and do not have time now to change over to a different count prior to my next trip to LV so...as I put the finishing touches on BS and count practice, I am plagued by questions such as; Why KO hits 2-2, 3-3 v 2 & 3 when other counts split. I initially learned Thorp's BS table and know there have been updates. I know that, based on table rules, the BS changes slightly. I am looking for the best "generalized" BS though (cheap and unchallenging, I know). I'm curious why there is any variation at all in BS tables (table rules remaining constant) from author to author.

It is quite correct for games where there's no double after split. Vancura & Fuchs' note this in a footnote on page 27 of my edition of KO Blackjack.

What you may be seeing are various attempts at a "generic" basic strategy. Where do you start with such a strategy? Do you want to use a single deck game as the basis, a double decker or shoe games? Do you want to include DAS or not? Each author may have a different starting point for a generic strategy and thus you might find slight differences.

If I were picking a starting point, I'd start with a six-deck no DAS strategy and the first variations I'd recommend learning would be those for DAS. Then I'd learn the single deck variations and surrender. However, with a six deck strategy that can be adjusted for DAS and surrender, you wouldn't miss much at all in the way of expected value, even while playing other games.

If one plays in Atlantic City or on the Las Vegas Strip, then he should learn 6 deck DAS first. All games in AC are DAS and one can find DAS games on the Strip.

When I wrote the post above, I almost said it that way, but I decided to go the other route. My reasoning? It is more harmful to make the wrong split without DAS than it is to not make the right one with DAS. At least that is what I think off the top of my head. For example, you wouldn't split fours in a non-DAS game. In a six-deck non DAS game, splitting fours against, say a 6,would cost you 74% of your gain from the proper strategy of just hitting the hand, whereas hitting the fours rather than splitting them would cost only 23% of your gain from splitting them in a DAS game. While you might be playing in a locale that commonly offers DAS on six deckers, that might not be true for all who would be reading a book that is offering a generic basic strategy. So my original advice still stands for that reason. Of course, if you are playing in a venue that routinely offers this rule, then by all means, learn the DAS variation first, but be aware of the non-DAS strategy in the event you are somewhere this rule is not offered.
