Do you know of any free card counting programs that can be downloaded
so a person can practice. I had one but lost it and cannot locate it on the web

Nifty graphics, has a good basic strategy coach, but won't check your count for ya. Doesn't let you split either.
I"m sure the one you are suggesting is a good program. But new counters need to do speed drills. You need one with a feature that will simply flash cards by quickly. As long as it goes through complete decks you don't need it to keep count as you know what the count at the end of the deck should be. But you do want it to keep time so that you can see your counting speed and accuracy improve. Second to this method is what they did before computers. You just see how fast you can thumb through a deck while counting and time yourself.
everyone is trying to reinvent the wheel.real cards are the best way to learn.the cards you use at home are the same cards in the casino.practicing on a computer to count is inferior to cards at home.just my opinion...
Not Mr D, but the reason I prefer a computer flash card program is that I don't have to worry about the hand coordination necessary to flip cards. I may be in the minority, but I find it difficult to flip a pack of cards, two at a time, in less than 25 seconds.
Also, some of the flash card programs will vary the rythm (time interval) of flipping the cards. This is something that you could do yourself, but then you would know when the rythm is going to change. This is a pretty useful drill since the rythm often changes in a real casino (dealer BJ, new dealer mid-shoe, etc).

but that just isn't going to build much speed. Best is something that can flash them by very quickly. You can do this with a deck yourself but it is better if you hold the deck with the faces towards you and just thumb through them as quickly as possible. Dealing out the hands as you describe just gives you entirely too much time to count them.
