How many blackjack books have been written?
Well, if it recommended stand on 16 or 15 vs T in conjunction with a count system, or some other method of predicting probabilities of what the next card is, it could be any of the fine authors of books available on this site.
If it recommended standing because even though the math says HIT, but because of casino voodoo, or phases of the moon, or other nonsense, that causes cards at blackjack tables to defy physical laws of nature, then it was probably John Patrick, or some con man of his ilk.
If the book was really old, it could have been some hack author who wasn't aware of the math calculations showing hitting better than standing.
It couldn't have been Walter Thompson's book, he firmly believes in the math and strict adherence to basic strategy when it comes to playing, the math just fails to work when it comes to betting due to unexplained voodoo. (He also isn't too sharp on the basic strategy part, he won't split 8,8 vs T, but he is operating under a handicap, you will have to excuse him.)
Of course there is also Composition Dependent Basic Strategy, which takes into consideration what cards are actually in your hand that make up that 16 or 15. See the first paragraph above, this is a weak method of predicting what card is more likely to be dealt next, based on cards that have already been played.
Or maybe it was "Counter's Basic Strategy" which means you would be playing hands with small bets wrong, but actually making the right move when the big bets are out. This allows you to play your hand consistently, and thus maybe avoid heat, but at the same time make the right move at the right time, when the big money is on the table.
