What do you find are the largest spreads you can reasonably get away with when playing SD and DD downtown? It is my understanding that for SD your spread should be at least 1-4 and for DD at least 1-6. Will these spreads even arouse the pit's attention? How far can I push my luck? Also, keep in mind I am not a regular, so I am not looking for longevity...

...you play red, you can most likely play 1-4 SD at the Hor__hoe with no heat. Come off the top occasionally with 2 units.
El C sweat the money a little more. For instance, if you were betting green 1-4 without an act you probably get the hook fairly quickly.
But you did say you aren't interested in longevity. If that is truly the case, then you consider 1-6 at SD and 1-12 at 2D until the suit/security appear behind your chair..........
All the above is just one opinion, YMMV.
