Another question about tipping

Would like some feedback on this scenerio: Played some green my final night in Vegas on my last trip. Bought in for $300 and ended up cashing out for $1015. I believe I played for about two and a half hours, and during this time, I was the only person at the table who was tipping the dealer(s). Instead of straight tipping them, I would normally just put a chip out front for them, and I won the majority of the time I did this. When I colored up, I just gave the dealer the $15 and kept the big chip. Granted, there's no "wrong" way to tip, but should I have given the dealer more when I cashed out? I'd estimate I tipped somewhere around $150-200 while playing, doubling up for the dealer.

I think you tipped the dealer way too much. Counting the $15 you gave him at the end of the session, you were paying this fellow between $66 and $86 an hour. You had a good session, but it could have been about 20% better without the heavy tips. You won't get any tips from the dealers on losing sessions.

I think its perfectly OK to tip, but I also think one of the biggest downfalls for players, including counters, is that tendency to overtip. In this case, you overtipped bigtime.

I tip when I'm winning, but not much. In sessions identical to your example I might have tipped half what you describe, maybe less. At the end of the session I probably would have left the 3 reds as you did. It's so darn arbitrary though. I mean, it depends on my mood, on the dealer's personality, on how much I'm up or down and so on. I don't think there can be a perfectly correct way to tip.

begins at home. $150-200 bucks is way over the top! Even if he/she was giving you preferential shuffling that's a lot of profit to throw their way.

I consider myself to be generous with about 3-5% of what you give for the same time frame.

...if you are spreading 25-300 (for six deck). With this spread, your EV more likely will range between $12.50/hr and $75 hr. dependendent upon game conditions, camo., etc. so for two and a half hours your EV ranges between $37.50 and $225. Unless you are spreading black, and mucho black at that, you'd probably be better servered by cutting back on your tipping dramatically. Personally, I wouldn't tip more than five or ten bucks an hour playing green.

I've posted before that you can make your tips LOOK bigger if you play them ON your bet instead of IN FRONT of your bet, because the money can continue for more than one hand if you are winning. So a $5 toke can get to be $20 or more with a few wins, as opposed to you taking a red chip out every time you feel you have to tip. But 20%+ of your win?? ( You walked with $700 profit and tipped $150-200) WAAAAAY to much!!

I, too, am a believer in tokes, and often toke more than I probably should. However, my total tokes for a similar session would be in the $20-$40 range. And that would be in a casino where I'm concerned about longevity - otherwise it would be less.
