Im sorry to hear that you never have played a game that had equity in it.There was a game that a group of us played in Atlantic City at Bally's and Wild Wild West that had a ton of equity in it,so much that they pulled the game off the floor a short time after our group played it around the clock.There are a couple of Double Deck games in Las Vegas that with its current rules and number of cards dealt out that makes it a winning game to play also.There are also a number of blackjack tournament that have equity in it also.Keep your ear to the ground you just might hear more....

It returned just a few links. In the text of each, the phrase "with equity" appears to quantiy something other than "game". In other words, none of them use the term "game with equity" the way you do.

I suspect you're using the term incorrectly. You must mean something else, but I'm still not able to discern just what that is. Could you cite an example of a "game with equity" and how it differs from a game "without equity"? :)

It's my understanding that a BJ tournament paying out more than the combined entry fees is considered to be a game 'with equity' or with 'positive equity.'

Possibly the BJKID could at least define the term as he is using it without giving away the holy grail.

equity: ... the money value of a property or of an interest in a property in excess of claims or liens against it ...

Drawings in which you get drawing tickets based on some sort of negative-expectation play, such as most slot play, have equity. Or drawings in which losing sports tickets are the price of getting drawing tickets. There are other examples, but those two quickly came to mind.

The money value of ... an interest in a property ... in a drawing would be your Expected Value in the drawing. Let's say there are 1000 entries in a drawing that will pay $5000. The drawing had a cost of admission of required negative-expectation play, losing bets, etc. You have 200 of those 1000 drawing tickets. Your equity in the drawing is $1000.

It was sentences like this that had me baffled:

I inferred from those words that the game itself had its own "equity" (whatever that means), which would run contrary to most people's definition of the term as well as your very clear description of a drawing entrant who has equity in the drawing. The drawing itself has no "equity".

I was seriously interested in finding out what BJKid meant by that. (It's not as if the term "positive EV" is a banned phrase on these boards.) Now, for some reason, I've completely lost interest. ;)

The term �equity� is used in lots of books/articles about tournaments. EV is a natural term for card-counters; equity is a term used by tournament people.

Note that in a tournament, your equity is not your EV. The equity represents the EV of the average player in the tournament. If you are more skilled than that, your EV is higher. If you are less skilled, then you have smaller EV.

It is even possible for an unskilled player to have negative EV in a tournament with Equity. There are some tournaments with equity that I would not enter, because they attract a lot of tournament sharks, and I am not sure that I have more skill than the average entrant.

Finally, I agree that you asked a perfectly reasonable question, and there was not need for anyone to cop an attitude.

In a Backgammon game, it basically means: what would be a fair payment to end the game now, considering all the possible outcomes from the current position? Since it's an average of all the possible outcomes, it is a type of "expected value." Knowing when to (properly) offer and when to accept a double is mainly a matter of accurately estimating your equity in the current position.

That's funny? I was there several times a week playing those games and there were many times that the tables were empty? Are you sure you were in the right Casino??
