Fairly standard term, but not exactly EV.
The term equity is used in lots of books/articles about tournaments. EV is a natural term for card-counters; equity is a term used by tournament people.
Note that in a tournament, your equity is not your EV. The equity represents the EV of the average player in the tournament. If you are more skilled than that, your EV is higher. If you are less skilled, then you have smaller EV.
It is even possible for an unskilled player to have negative EV in a tournament with Equity. There are some tournaments with equity that I would not enter, because they attract a lot of tournament sharks, and I am not sure that I have more skill than the average entrant.
Finally, I agree that you asked a perfectly reasonable question, and there was not need for anyone to cop an attitude.
