Why No Answers?

Can anyone tell me why it's so hard to get a response here? I don't want to be seen as a complainer, but I'm quite frustrated tonight.

Since joining the board, I've posted two requests for help. The first, with subject "Mesquite Single-Deck Edge?", was posted six days ago, and still has not received a reply. The second, "Comparisons of Simulation Software", was posted a day and a half ago with the same result.

Since re-entering the world of blackjack after a layoff of several years, I've signed up for the forums at four different sites. I've been curious to see how they compare, and if I eventually sign up for any of the pay boards, my choice will be largely affected by the quality of the sites' free forums.

In a discussion on one of the other boards today, this forum was characterized as a "toilet bowl". I don't think it is--I've seen some really helpful threads here--but, as I said, I'm frustrated right now.

I'm hoping that this is truly atypical; is it?

Well, I can't really comment on that, but I will say this much: you need to join Green Chip. On the Green Chip pages, you'll be much more likely to get quick answers, plus a lot more than you'll find on the free page. It's worth the money to join, trust me on that.

One caviat: Stay away from the Politics page of Green Chip if you are thin-skinned.

And more specifically, "internet related free.

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, known as the internet (and some believe the founder was Al Gore :-) ) was the ARPANET. Simply, and I do mean simply stated, it was a research project where pieces of information could be shared by universities. When the TCP/IP protocol was decided on, anyone with a computer that was connected, ususally at universities, but you know the military was lurking about, as it was their idea originally, could freely share information (mostly research) through this form of communication.

The sharing concept took hold, as computers and their development grew. The people behind this growth, pioneers as they were (and still are), looked at this form of communication, along with the research as their "baby." They began to shun the commercialization of this medium as the internet grew into what we call the "web" today.

Thus, what was the freely sharing of information was seen to become something to be exploited for and by those evil corporations and individuals who would want to charge for this "sharing" concept.

The internet was, as some would argue and now look back, a sort of Utopia. A cyberspace utopia.

Today, we still have many bits and pieces of "free" sharing of information, but as all things, free costs money. Quite an oxymoron, don't you think?

So although this site, as well as others, require no fees to observe the freely sharing of whatever information you find here, it still costs the operator. This is why many of us, subscribe to GC, Don's Domain, VPHomepage, LVAdvisor, etc. because the quality of information, along with the willingness of people to contribute is of a slightly (or much more) higher quality than you'll get here (and other sites) for free.

To be sure there is still a lot of high quality information shared freely on free sites, but the main difference that I can see, is that these sites are all ADVANTAGE type of sites, of which the people here learn how to risk "real money" at the turn of a card, toss of a die, spin of a wheel, where they are likely in a matter of minutes lose much more than the costs of all these sites are combined for a full year.

I also think that every one of these sites have a full money back guarantee to them. So why wouldn't someone take a look. Sounds like an advantage play to me. :-)

People have personal lives and moods. Sometimes when you post a question, you will get lots of responses, and sometimes you won't. I wouldn't read too much into it.

One thing you can do is to use the search function on this page to look for previous threads on the topic to which you are interested. Greenchip is your best source for indepth discussion, though.

As for anybody who characterizes this site as a "toilet bowl" or any other negative concept, if those same people come over here to advertise their site, product, or service, I would give that some serious consideration.

I would search around all the free sites trying to get a grip on what is really going on. I then joined Green Chip. I was and still am very happy since that decision. There are tons of kick ass individuals asking great questions and giving good advice. Sometimes I call it Green Crack because I feel addicted to reading the posts! If you are serious about advantage play and want to learn a lot GC is the place to be.

I have no doubt about that. Not everyone can afford to join, though. I'll probably end up joining just one paid forum, and my choice of which one to join can't help but be affected by what I've experienced in the corresponding free forum.

:-) That's what I've heard. There are enough other places I can find political discussions. I don't think I want to get involved here.

By the way, it appears that the only way to quote from the original message is manually. Is that correct? Also, it's a pain to have to type a new subject in every time. Why can't the forum software include a default "Re:" subject?

Not everyone can afford to join, though.

Not meant to be disrespectful, but if you can't afford four dollars a month, you probably shouldn't be thinking about casino games.

All you've said is absolutely true, although I don't accept the characterization of "evil" corporations (not in all cases, anyway). Believe it or not, I do believe that commercial enterprises, including Stanford's, have a right to profit from their products. That being said...

Of course. And I wish I could afford to subscribe to all of the above. Unfortunately, I can't. It does seem, though, that in the case of some of the free forums it's "slightly" rather than "much more".

Yes, and not being one of these full-time "advantage players", it's not as easy for me to justify the costs. I have to rely mostly on the freely shared information.

I actually am trying one of them out right now. It just doesn't happen to be bj21 Green Chip, which will probably come later if I'm still feeling comfortable here when the other trial expires.

Very true. Having been involved with BBSs, mailing lists, and Web forums for over a decade, I'm well aware of this. It was just that two posts in a row, and which happened to be my FIRST two posts, had not received responses. Guess I was just feeling unloved. ;-)

Good point. I guess I hadn't done my due diligence, at least on the subject of simulation software. On the other hand, the CBJN question was specific enough that I doubt that a search would turn anything up.

Well, believe it or not, most of my play is at Casino Verite. I'm hopeful that one day I'll have a steadier income and be able to play more. In the meantime, $48 (a year's subscription) can go quite a ways at a two or three dollar table.

Let me address one question you raised above:

In the early days, we had that here. The problem with this is that most posters didn�t put up non-default subject lines. So you would getg threads where the first post says �I have a question�, and all the responses are �Re: I Have a question�, �Re: I Have a question�, �Re: I Have a question�, You look at that thread, and you don�t have a clue as to what the thread is about.

Now, we at least make posters think about a subject line. That makes for threads whose meaning is more obvious.

Green Chip posts are saved going back several years. Sometime you may to search for previous posts. For example, maybe you want to search to see everything that DD� wrote about insurance. The search facility returns a list of subject lines. By reading the subject lines, you can better figure out which post addresses your issue.

I unwisely referred to a characterization of this forum as a "toilet bowl" without really understanding the way the originally poster was using the term.

The phrase was used to refer to the state of this forum for a short period of time several years ago, and does NOT describe the poster's current assessment of the forum. At the time, action was taken to moderate the board and the description is not at all appropriate at the current time, and the person who used the phrase does not think of it in this way.

I should have made sure I understood the context of the discussion before barging in here and misrepresenting his/her feelings.

I do understand the reasoning. In all the mailing lists I've subscribed to through the years, it's been a constant battle to get posters to change the subject line when the content changes, so I guess I can accept the policy.

After posting about this, I realized that I can scroll up to see the existing subject, so it's easy to add a "Re:" when appropriate, as I did in this post. Some forum software doesn't allow that, and I find myself trying to guess at what the original subject line said.

What you do is hold down your left mouse button and drag it over the part of the message you want to quote. Then you right click and select Copy. Then, in the text of your message, you right click and select Paste. Half a dozen mouse clicks, more or less.

Sure. Exactly what I do. But how do you set of the quoted material from the reply? Coming from a long email background, I'm used to using a quote character ('>'), but that results in a major mess here.

Click on "Before You Post" to your left. Then click "Site FAQ List." Then click on "How can I quote a previous article when I post a follow up?"
