What do you get when you bet one unit, and you get the minimum pair of jack?? Answer: you get your money back. Gee, isn't that nice of the casino?!?! But you DON'T WIN!!!! folks. You should get 2 units back. It's nice not to lose, and I'm sure someone mite respond like that, but is there anyone out there that can win consistantly?? Don't play these machines people, SAVE YOUR MONEY, and the casino will get something better.

Most jacks or better machines still have a house edge, even with perfect play. My suggestion, try deuces wild, or double double. Most of those machines have a minute player edge with perfect play. They still make money, cause most people dont know perfect play.

...on certain, few video poker machines, a player can expect slightly over a 100% return. A book by Jean Scott, "The Frugal Gambler" makes a good point to support this. It's in paperback for $12.95 last I looked. I'm not shilling, it's worth a read because it's well written and a must for comp hounds.
Even you barely break even or limit your losses w/ perfect play, you have alot of fun doing what you enjoy and gain a good bit of comps at the same time.

I will take John Patrick's style of "one card" analysis (the same type of logic he uses to conclude hard 4,5, or 6 are great hands to surrender) and examine some common JOB hands and plays.
You are dealt A,A,A,3,8. The 'math boyz' will tell you to keep the 3 Aces and discard the 2 low cards. COMPLETELY WRONG. You already have 3 out of 4 Aces in your hand. The chances of getting that 4th Ace in only 2 draws is mightly slim. Better to discard all the cards except for 1 of the Aces and go for the Royal Flush. The Royal pays much better, and even the 'math boyz' will tell you, the Royal Flush is where all the positive return is in JOB.
that an excellent strategy using this logic is very simple: On every single hand you are dealt, discard each and every card that is not a suited ace,king,queen,jack,or ten! After all, the Royal pays the best so always go for the Royal!

Keeping 3 aces, while discarding the 3 & 8, results in 1,081 combinations: 46 hands will be quad aces, 66 hands will be full houses and the remaining 969 hands will be trip aces.
Keeping none of the cards will result in 1,533,939 combinations with only one hand being the Royal Flush.

I created a hand of Ah Ac As 3d 8d; keeping any one of the aces while discarding the remaining 4 cards yields 178,385 combinations, with only one hand being a royal flush.
