I do exactly what dog-hand does. I know of a couple of counters that use 1/2 deck resolution in shoes. I think they do it because they want to, not just because they can. If one were to practice enough, I'd suspect 1/2 deck resolution would not be that difficult. Whether it would make enough difference in your EV to be worth the trouble is debatable.
I will add that if I play a shoe game where we get inside of 2 decks remaining, say a place that cuts off just one deck (not very common) then I switch modes at the 2 decks left mark, and play as if it were a DD game using 1/2 deck resolution. If I could find a shoe that went inside one deck, I'd switch to 1/4 deck resolution also, but we know how likely that is to happen... :)
