Why you say ? Because it is in the best interest of the casinos to keep it beatable. It brings in millions every year to sit down thinking that they know how to do it. As we all know they don't. I deal a single deck game in our casino with a 25.00 to 2000.00 limit DOA, H17, NO DAS, 60% PEN. Our casino has a 20% hold on this game ! That is 20 cents for every dollar bet. Management estimates that without card counters the change would be almost zero. What this means is counters, even though the good ones win, have almost no effect on the casino bottom line. Surely casinos realize this.

in blackjack helps to promote the game as beatable, thus drawing in more players. But casino management wants the winning to happen at some other casino, not theirs. They still get the benefit of the public knowing the game can be beaten, but not at the cost of paying out large amounts to counters. And even when they bar someone from the game, it gives the appearance to the public that the game is beatable, otherwise why bar the player? The public thinks the player would be arrested if he was doing something illegal, so the barring means the player had figured out how to win at the game legally. This gives hope to all the gamblers out there to try their luck.

You're probably right, card counting doesn't have much effect on overall profit, but only because there are far too many losing card counters that dont have enough skill to beat the game that offset the winning CC's. There are very many losing card counters out there that are to lazy and stubborn to put in enough effort to beat the game and many of them post on this site regularly. Your SD game sounds like many of the downtown Vegas games, possibly the Horseshoe, which is usually pretty tolerant of small stakes players. Also your use of the word "hold" is wrong. If the hold is 20%, that does not mean 20 cents of every dollar bet is won by the casino, it means that 20 cents of every dollar dropped by the table is kept, and 80 cents is returned to winners. It is only the amount dropped at the table and not the amount bet.

That yes they bar counters on occasions. True that counting does work, I count myself. I do not alert the pit to any counter, nor do most of my co-workers. Most of the dealers do not know a counter from a system player. Of course we have a few brown nosers who know how to count that do squeal to the pit critter. Yes the 20 cents on the dollar bet is the hold with 80 Cents being returned is correct.

A little know fact to some casinos is they could do away with all the shuffle machines, spies, consultants, extra money on extra decks and still have the same hold on the game with a single and double deck game as a six decker with good rules. Factoid.

If players lost 20% of every dollar that they put in the betting square, nobody would play the game. Mathemagic is right. If they collect $100. in the drop box, they can expect to make about $20. in profit. The actual profit that they make would be determined by the method of play by each individual player, the amount of money they bet and the variables of standard deviation. Since this is impossible to equate in real playing time, they go by the drop box method. It is not an exact method, but over the passage of time, it has proven itself to be relatively accurate.

Your comments about Casino's being just as well off using one or two decks instead of 6 or 8 is not entirely true. The greatest value of the multiple decks is to cut down on the amount of time during which the player has an advantage. This forces the player to increase his largest bet by at least 10 times and sometimes as much as 20 times his minimum bet. Those card counters who are unwilling to learn about standard deviation or the necessary bankroll requirements can do everything else right and still lose badly.

Show me a one deck game [with good rules] dealt down to 20 cards or a two deck game dealt down to 40 cards and I'll show you a line up of card counters chomping at the bit.

I think the very last comment is the most relevent here, you may need to get your thinking straight if you ever want to make it to upper management.

Although I do not mention hold percentages on my site the term is worth defining because it comes up a lot. The hold percentage is the ratio of chips the casino keeps to the total chips sold. This is generally measured over an entire shift. For example if blackjack table x takes in $1000 in the drop box and of the $1000 in chips sold the table keeps $300 of them (players walked away with the other $700) then the game's hold is 30%. If every player loses their entire purchase of chips then the hold will be 100%. It is possible for the hold to exceed 100% if players carry to the table chips purchased at another table. A mathematician alone can not determine the hold because it depends on how long the player will sit at the table and the same money circulates back and forth. There is a lot of confusion between the house edge and hold, especially among casino personnel."

I would give the casinos, in general, the benefit of the doubt in assuming they wouldn't hire an ignorant fool such as yourself, but in case I'm wrong... better find yourself a copy of "Being a Pit Boss for Dumb Assholes", maybe you can learn a couple of things before YOUR boss catches on.
