I use to avoid tables that had only one playing square open, since it limited by ability to expand to 2 hands during advantageous shoes. However, I find utilizing 'partner' betting to be rather advantageous to a player confronted with this scenario. Firstly, only sit beside good basic strategy players, a family member that takes guidance well, or even another counter. So when you are dealt 8,8 vs dealer 9,10 or Ace, you're not obligated to put out additional bets, as the primary player does. Also often the player declines the insurance (VS Ace), but you can make the insurance bet (if TC>3), and often the player/dealer will allow you to make a 'full' insurance bet for this playing square. Given that insurance is the most profitable play in BJ, this and splitting benefits, adds a significant player EV.
