I find performing a side count of particular card ti be rather beneficial for certain normal BJ play decisions and/or playing side bets (ie Kings Bounty, Lucky 7's, etc.). While performing the usual Hi-lo counting, use your finger and thumb to count a particular card (advance your thumb by one finger for each of the specific tracked card), so when marginal plays where this particular tracked card is most important, the extra information generates significant EV gain on these marginal decision plays. Assuming no 'side bets' cards of significance, I track either Aces or Sevens. These cards refine the insurance decision most importantly, but can often alter the doubling of player's 11 (for ace side counting) vs dealer's 10, or the plays, such as a dealer's 2 vs player's 14 (for 7 side counting - extra 7's changes the right decision).
