ROR question in the book Blackjack Attack

I have a question about the ROR numbers given in Blackjack Attack (2'nd edition). In the worlds greatest blackjack simulation chapter, they give the ROR as 10.8% for 6.0/8 S17 DAS for a 1-8 spread (back-counting with a 400 unit bank). The Win/100 equal 0.96 units and the SD/hand equals 3.74.

However, when i go to the ROR chapter and try to calculate my risk of ruin (for 400 unit bank)using the charts provided, i achieve a ROR of 56.6%. I think my problem is calculating the expectation per hand (in units). I did this by dividing .96 by 100 to determine what my win/hand would be. It comes out to 0.0096 or basically 0.01. Would my win/hand be the same as my expectation per hand (in units).

Some clarification would be greatly appreciated.

The back-counting tables are a little tricky. Note that the SD/Hand is given; it's 3.74. But the EV or Win/Hand is NOT given. Instead, the EV or Win/100 is given, and it is 0.96. However, this is the win per 100 hands SEEN, since we are back-counting. The 24.5%, under the Back-Counting heading, indicates that only about 25 hands per 100 dealt are actually PLAYED at TC>=+1.

So, to get the EV/Hand, you need to divide the 0.96 by 24.5, not 100. This gives .039. Now, go to the bottom chart of Table 9.1 on page 144 and use the closest numbers available, namely .04 for EV and 3.75 for SD. ROR is 10.3%. Close enough!

First off, just wanted to say i thought your book was great. I'm not very computer savy, and even if i wanted to varify the numbers you came up with in your simulations, i wouldn't know where to begin. I'd be too worried that i would make a mistake during the simulation, and that my numbers would be way off anyways. However, i trust the numbers that you came up with and you basically saved me the trouble in trying to learn this for myself. I'm sure the numbers are basically correct, but i'm confused about how you came up with the standard deviation for these different games listed in chapter 10.

You probably know i back-count mostly 8 deck shoe games, the SD/Hand for 6/8 S17 DAS for a 1-8 spread is given as 3.74. The SD/100 is given as 18.54. I don't really understand what these numbers mean. Other people have quoted the Standard Deviation formula to be 1.1*(square root of N). Wouldn't this formula suggest that the standard deviation wouldn't change as the number of decks, rules change. As you can tell, i am very confused about the subject. An explanation of how these numbers came about and what they exactly mean would be helpful.

I know this post is directed towards Don, but anyone who could help me, i would greatly appreciate their efforts.
