Question about calculating the High-Low Index

I read the book "Professional Blackjack" surely from Stanford Wong and I have a question left. I do not understand the accurate calculation of the High-Low index.
When I play for example at a 6 deck game and 26 cards are delt, what means that 5 1/2 decks are left or 11/12 of the whole deck.Mr. Wong says that you just simply have to divide the running count by the number of decks (or fraction of a deck) that you have not seen.
But what is meant with that? Should I divide a running count of, for example +2 through 5 1/2 or through 11/12 or through the whole 5?

divide by 5.5

You divide the running count by number of unseen decks. Shark

Unseen cards

Divide by the number of unseen cards.

If you show up late to the deal, and 26 cards are already in the rack, don't forget to treat them as if they were behind the cut.

A shortcut

Unless your running count is precisely 11 (+ or -) you probably dont want to divide by the uneven 5.5.At the beginning of the shoe it's ok to divide by the number of full decks here 5 or even simpler to multiply by 2 and put in the decimal point. So the result of your example is +0.4.
The consequence of this result is that you should stand on 16v10 and on 12v4, double soft18v2 or soft15v4 but still hit 12v3 and refrain from doubling 9v2.
