player complaints

Want to share an experience with you, and would welcome any advice. I was playing at a quarter table awhile back and had this guy pissed off because of the way I played. While I did did vary from basic a few times, the plays he complained about were my hitting soft 17 against a dealers 7, and splitting 9s against a 6. He lost when I did this. At first I just tried to ignore him, but he became rather insistent that " taking the dealers 10..." cost him money. I wasn't even in the last seat! Of course, his average bet was approx. $200. and we were all losing. Just one of those nights where the dealer can't miss. So he was taking a pretty big hit, and getting pretty pissy. I didn't feel physically threatened, but there was no other table to play at, and I was getting annoyed. I politely told him that I play my cards against the dealers up-card, and that was that. He just insisted, again, that I was responsible for thousands of his losses.

How do you folks deal with people like this?

This happens from time to time.
What I usually say is "If you don't like the way I play, maybe you should find another table"

Tell him you work for the casino and were told to play there.

"When did you get a vote in my money?" in a tone that indicates there will be no further discussion. When you try to be reasonable people take it as a sign of weakness.

Let me give you a recount of my recent experience. An Asian woman who was a bad player (and regular at this particular casino) complained about my going from one bet to two. She literally blocked me from spreading! When I asked her to move her bets over one spot she refused. I made a few sarcastic remarks and continued to play. On a negative count I took a restroom break and when I returned the dealer changed penetration from a poor 60% to about 55% to drive me off--which worked! The management wanted to keep this loser at their tables and happy. Moral of the story--grin and bear it!

Wait for a hand where correct play is obvious.

Ask him for his opinion on how to play.

If you lose the hand , tell him "I'm never listening to you again".

Keep reminding him of that hand if he opens his mouth again.

If you look them in the eye and respond firmly chances are they will back down and either leave or shut their mouth. The guy you're talking about is probably a typical bully. When you stand up to them they will almost always back off.

Got a few more to add. Just got back from an overnighter. Was playing to the right of a gal that was winning and pressing. She's up to about $200 and has 8-3. I have hard 15 and dealer shows a 10. The TC is +2. I hit an ace and stand with my 16. She protests, and asks me to take a card because " I will screw the whole thing up!" I politely refuse. She doesn't double but draws my 5, hits again and, you guessed it, hits a 10. Dealer was stiff and broke. She pissed and moaned about how much my play cost her and left in a huff.

About an hour later, I douled A7 and drew a 6. The women to my left ( a different one) busted hitting hard 15. Dealer drew and made 17. She glared at me and said , " You had 18, you know!" I responded that I actually did know, and she shut up.

All in all, it's just part of the game, I guess. Thanks for the pat responses and advce.

In the second incident I did have A7, but the dealer showed 10, not a small card. I hit a six and a 10, the women to my left had 15 and busted. Dealer had a 7 in the hole. That's what prompted her remark.

The dealer had to have a small card up, yet she busted a hand of hard 15 and you are worried about what SHE thinks ?

The one's that yell the loudest, know the least......

O.K. it makes sence now. I should have read your other post, before I posted a reply.

Many times, all it takes to shut up another player is "The Look".
Anyone that is married, knows what "The Look" is......

If that doesn't work, the Post Office routine, has yet to fail.

In this situation, at the next negative count I would have excused myself for a restroom break. I then would have walked to the gift shop, purchased a basic strategy card, and returned to the table. The next time the joker bitched about a BS decision, I would have reached into my pocket, tossed the card to him, and said something like "Here - this might help you learn how to play better".

Oh yeh, A lot of ideas go through my mind regarding things to say. The one that sticks out in my mind is;

" Have you had a good look in the mirror lately? You've got much bigger problems besides losing at Blackjack!"
But, can't let these people distract you from what you come to the casino for.
