You're confusing progressions with bet spread
Ive been confused about how people talk about progression betting is bad. It would really help me if someone could tell me how I should bet my hands? I'll tell you how much I know and maybe someone can give me advice on how I should bet? I use the high-low count system, I know perfect basic strategy for mutiple decks dealer stands s17 no doubling after pair splitting and doubling after splitting double on any two cards, and also know the same charts for strategy numbers from "Professional Blackjack". Also I am a $5-$25 player right now. Thank you for any responses and it would also help if you told me how you bet your hands.
Shoe games require special treatment. First of all, you need to get decent penetration, for 6 decks, this means at least 4.5 decks are dealt before the cut card comes out.
Next, you need a game with good rules. If you can find dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed, late surrender, and resplit aces, you're getting as good as you can expect. In Las Vegas, I know you can find $5 games with those rules at both Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand, but it's rare. More likely, you can will find games with dealer hitting on soft 17. While this is not as good, it is still acceptable. You really, really want late surrender; this increases your expected value and lowers your variance.
You will often hear that you need a large spread for shoe games, but this isn't necessary if you avoid playing negative counts. If simple wait until the count is positive before you start and leave when it is negative, you will do better spreading only 1-4, than playing through negative counts with a large spread.
For your spread, 5-25, if you wait until the true count reaches +1 and leave when the count is negative, you can bet as follows, based the TC:
0: 5
1: 5
2: 10
3: 15
4: 20
5+: 25
If you want to reduce your risk (also reducing your expected value) you can do the following:
0-2: 5
3-4: 10
5-6: 15
7-8: 20
9+: 25
For those of you that are enamored with single deck, what I've described above will give you a better performance than just about every single deck game in Las Vegas.
