Standing behind your target table for more than a few rounds will make you look very suspicious. Instead, stand behind an adjacent table; preferably another game, such as roulette or pai gow. Appear to be interested in the results at that table while counting with quick glances. You need good eyesight for this. My right eye is better than my left, so I tend to count the table to the right. You also need to count quickly to minimize the time spent glancing. Also, try to glance without moving your head much.
Be sure you can recognize cards from a distance. If you use a level 1 count, you need only to distinguish among low, middle, and high cards. Low cards are easy, but an 8 can be confused with a 10. Train yourself to recognize the different markings.
If the count approaches your wong-in point, move towards your target table and watch casually for a round or two. This way, if you do wong-in, it won't look like you suddenly rushed in.
Another player coming in and blocking your view is annoying. In this case avoid craning your neck. Move your body in such a way as to not appear like you're looking at the that table.
If you're playing in a casino with multiple pits, go to another pit after abandoning a shoe.
Backcounting requires patience; you will often spend a hour or so without playing a single hand. To deal with impatience, remind yourself that you are here to win money with a minimum of risk and that playing negative counts is contrary to that goal.
