I'm using the CVBJ KO Preferred Deviations, but I am curious whether or not I could incorporate indices from different deviation tables. I want to consider the possibility of adding a deviation for splitting 10's on a dealers 5 or 6 when the count is at +4 or higher for a double deck game. Is this a valid modification or is it ignorance on my part?
Valid. If your IRC = -8, then the indices would be +1 for both. If IRC = -4, then +5.

Ran a sim with a surprise. Used hi-lo thinking going off indeces but defaulted to basic strategy. With bet ramp basic strategy return was 1.1% while with full indices return was 1.4%.
You don't mention anything about rules, number of decks, bet ramp, or how many indices you used. It isn't the return that matters; it's the SCORE. If you furnish all the information, I'll tell you the difference between the two.
