More Index Numbers
Mr. Lee,
According to Norm's CV (I don't have my books handy), you should surrender when the HiLo TC (all of the numbers given here are for HiLo) equals or exceeds these index numbers:
Surrender Indexes
16 v. 9: 0
16 v. X: -3
16 v. A: -1
15 v. X: 0
You should stand when the TC exceeds these index numbers:
Hit/Stand Indexes
16 v. 9: 5
16 v. X: 0
16 v. A: 8
15 v. X: 4
For each of the four hands, the surrender index (S#) is below the hit/stand index (H#), so you should not surrender but rather hit for TC < S#, and surrender (if possible) for TC >= S#. If you cannot surrender (not allowed, or already hit or split), then you should hit for TC <= H#, and stand for TC > H#.
For example, say you have the 16 vs. X that we all know and love (except for ihate16, who has repeatedly declared his feelings on the subject). If the TC is above -3, surrender if possible. If the TC is below -3, hit it (and pray). If you cannot surrender, then hit it (and pray) if the TC is below 0, otherwise stand (and pray). On this hand over the years, my prayers have frequently been answered... but not nearly as frequently as they've been cruelly ignored ;-)
Hope this helps!
