What's up with all this KO bashing?
If I had a suspicious mind, I'd have to wonder if the KO bashers aren't casino types who don't like the idea that such a simple system can win money from them.
My opinion, after 2 years: KO is an excellent system for the recreational player.
The only thing I'd recommend for a new player is to drop all the IRCs and "key" counts given in the book by -4, so the pivot is always 0 instead of +4. Apparently, the only reason the pivot is at +4 in the original system is because it represents approximately the same advantage as Hi-Lo +4. But, with the pivot at 0 and the IRCs at (-4 * #decks), you are all set to transition to True-count KO (TKO), whenever you're ready, and you can do the transition incrementally. That is, I'm still at the stage where I mostly play in running-count mode, using the (-4 adjusted) key and pivot as described in KO preferred, but whenever the count is near the key either early or late in the shoe (the cases where unbalanced counts are less accurate), I can do a quick true-count calculation to check it. I haven't started doing it yet, but eventually I plan to improve my playing strategies with more precise TKO indices for at least the I18. The advantage of this approach is that I can add the indices a few at a time, but I'll still be playing in running-count mode for most hands, doing the calculation only on an "as needed" basis.
